GPHL’s Jianmin Pharmacy was the first of its kind to provide a 24-hour pharmacy service in China. Over 48 years this practice has been regarded as “the light in the night”.
In 1950s, Jianmin Pharmacy on Beijing Road, Guangzhou was one of the largest state-owned pharmacies in South China. Many customers came to this pharmacy for medicine even late at night. Thanks to the management’s innovative response to people’s needs, the first pharmacy to be open 24 hours was launched.

This service has continued unbroken over all these years. Even though the pharmacy had to close down temporarily for two months renovation, this service still continued.
“24-hour service is not merely a slogan but embodies decades of hard work”, said GPHL general manager Jiang Ning. “For this 24-hour service, we have four employees in rotation. We overcame many difficulties in order to serve citizens in need at night. We have persevered with the service, always keeping in mind our company’s guiding pronciple: ‘caring wholeheartedly for people’s health’. According to our estimations, this service has benefited more than one million people.”
Jianmin Pharmacy’s efforts eventually paid off. The pharmacy on Beijing Road was awarded the title of National Pioneer.
