Guangdong cracked down on 4,930 food safety-related crimes in 2020

In 2020, the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department detected more than 4,930 food and environmental criminal cases, and detained more than 6,670 people, protecting the people's food and medicine safety and the ecological environment.

In order to protect the health and living environment of residents, Guangdong has set up a special investigation department to crack down on crimes involving food safety and environmental damage. Guangdong has also cooperated with Internet companies to crack down on criminal networks related to production and sales by obtaining more than 3,000 counterfeit leads.

From May to August 2020, the police officers in Shenzhen, Foshan, and Shantou launched a joint operation to crack down on a gang that produces and sells fake wine. The police arrested 69 criminal suspects in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shantou, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Chaozhou and other places, of which 42 were criminalized. The police also seized more than 6,000 counterfeit wines and a batch of counterfeit raw materials at the scene. The amount involved in this case is about 35 million yuan.

In order to actively respond to crimes against food safety and environmental damage, the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department and 12 prefecture-level municipal public security bureaus have established special agencies. Some cities have also established laboratories to promote food safety. Guangzhou established the "Food, Medicine and Environment Forensic Science Laboratory". Shenzhen has established a quick inspection laboratory. Chaozhou has established a "food-medicine testing laboratory", which has increased the number of food-related cases solved in the city by 262.5%.
