On January 1, 2007, He Ji Gong was incorporated as two companies—Guangzhou Baiyunshan He Ji Gong Pharmaceutical Limited (formerly as He Ji Gong Pharmaceutical Store) and Baiyunshan External Used Drugs Factory of Guangzhou Baiyunshan Pharmaceutical Holdings Co. Ltd (formerly as Xinmin Medical Dressing Factory). He Ji Gong has gone through many phases of integration. Although it has been merged and renamed many times, its spirit of serving the public has been passed down through the generations and is considered the company’s founding ethos.

During the reign of the Guangxu Emperor in the late Qing Dynasty, Xu Ningyuan Drugstore began producing Qing Liang You (to ‘refresh the mind’). Lu Shuntian set up Xinmin Medical Dressing Factory in the 12th year of the Republic of China. Without a doubt, established a new era in the production of sanitary and hygienic wares in Guangdong and even the south of China. When the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression broke out, He Fuqing established He Ji Gong Pharmaceutical Store in the spirit of resistance. After 70 years of constant development, it has become a pharmaceutical factory specializing in antipyretic analgesic and drugs for external use.

Ji Gong, who lived during the Southern Song Dynasty (9th/10th Century CE), was a learned and kind-hearted Zen Buddhist monk. Purportedly, he was skilled in medicine and helped to cure a number of people suffering from complicated diseases. His virtuous character of always helping the poor and standing up to social injustice, left a lasting good impression on the people.

Out of the admiration for Ji Gong, He Fuqing, the founder of He Ji Gong Pharmaceutical Store, named the store He Ji Gong. He followed Ji Gong’s example of helping the masses and combining medicine with charity. At the same time, since He Ji Gong sounds like Huo Ji Gong (a real Ji Gong), a legend went around that there was a real Ji Gong in Guangdong in the Yangtze River region, a rumor which swept through the surrounding areas.

In 1936, He Fuqing successfully developed Mie Tong Xing (for pain relief and controlling fever) and later renamed it Jie Re Zhi Tong San. He Ji Gong’s Jie Re Zhi Tong San (currently named as A Ka Fen San), which cost only one and a half fen for one pack, was well received by the public due to its fair price and good quality. There is even a folk song—“He Ji Gong, He Ji Gong! Within 5 minutes your pain is gone! Why fear a fever? He Ji Gong’s Zhi Tong San makes you better!” This song has been widely spread among the people and the brand image of He Ji Gong enjoys great popularity.
