With a history dating back to as early as the year 1828, Guangzhou Wanglaoji Pharmaceutical Company Limited (Wanglaoji), a subsidiary of Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Holdings Limited (GPHL), began as Wanglaoji United Pharmaceutical Factory and later became Guangzhou Yangcheng Pharmaceutical Company Limited in December 1992. In March 2004, it reassumed the name of Wanglaoji and was officially renamed as Guangzhou Wanglaoji Pharmaceutical Company Limited. Afterwards, it was transformed into a joint venture with Hong Kong Tongxing Pharmaceutical Company Limited in February 2005.

Over the past two centuries, Wanglaoji has become one of the top 50 national major Traditional Chinese Patent Medicine enterprises. In 2009, it was ranked No. 68 among the China’s top 100 pharmaceutical companies. By 2013, its sales volume had reached 3.3 billion RMB, making Wanglaoji the single largest manufacturing company under GPHL garnering the award of Leading Enterprise in the National Food Industry by China National Food Industry Association.

As a famed brand in Guangzhou, Wanglaoji was awarded the status of a China Time-honored Brand from the Ministry of Commerce in 2006 and within the following three years had become a well-known trademark nationwide. On November 10, 2010, GPHL , together with the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the China Food and Drug Administration, the China Association for Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Intellectual Property Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, jointly held the China’s Intellectual Property Forum and Wanglaoji’s Health Industry Development Plan Press Conference. At the Conference, Beijing Brand Asset Appraisal Limited announced that Wanglaoji was the No. 1 Brand in China with its brand value up to 108 billion RMB.

Due to excellent quality management, Wanglaoji became the first national pharmaceutical enterprise certified by Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration. In 2003, it acquired China National GMP Certification and later obtained the National Production License for Industrial Products from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China in 2007. At the same time, it received an A Grade ranking in the Food Hygiene Grading System from Guangzhou’s Municipal Health Bureau. In 2013, it gained the titles of “Guangdong Model Enterprise” and “National Advanced Enterprise”.

Wanglaoji specializes on food and medicine business, outpacing its rivals in the sales volumes of boxed herbal tea nation and industrywide. As the company grows rapidly, it has become one of the biggest tax-payers and most outstanding companies in tax contribution in Baiyun District of Guangzhou.
