According to the Guangdong Expressway Network Plan (2020-2035) unveiled by the province's department of transportation, Guangdong will build 15,000 kilometers of new highways by 2035, with a highway network covering the province, linking up the ‘Pan-Pearl River Delta’ (a huge area including Fujian, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan, Hong Kong and Macao).

Highway mileage highest in China for 6 consecutive years

As of the end of 2019, the total mileage of Guangdong's highways reached 9495 kilometers, and it is highest in the country for 6 consecutive years.

The length of highways in the Greater Bay Area stands at 4500 kilometers, with the density in core area about 8.2 kilometers per 100 square kilometers, which is higher than that of the New York and Tokyo metropolitan areas. The GBA has built four cross Pearl River channels including the Humen Bridge and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

In addition, transportation in eastern, western and northern Guangdong was improved with the total mileage of highways standing at almost 5000 kilometers by the end of 2019.

The province's increasingly comprehensive highway network has laid a foundation for pushing coordinated regional development, but it is not enough.

To build 47 new highways totalling 2185 kilometers

The plan will improve the expressway network in key areas, building 47 new highways totalling 2185 kilometers in length.

Along the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao Science and Technology Innovation Corridor, 13 expressways will be added to improve connections between Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Hong Kong and Macao.

Other new sections within the Pear River Delta include the Qingyuan-Gaoming Expressway, The Second Jiangmen-Zhaoqing Expressway, Huizhou Airport Expressway and so on.

From 2021 to 2025, Guangdong will undertake 45 projects to push forward the province’s highway mileage to 12500 kilometers, with a total investment of about 519.9 billion yuan.

In the future, there will be seven routes cutting across the Pearl River estuary: the Huangpu Bridge, Lianhua Mountain Channel, Nansha Bridge, Shiziyang Channel, Humen Bridge, Shenzhen-Zhongshan Channel and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.
