Wanglaoji releases global first ‘Liang Cha’ international standard

Wanglaoji began research on setting an international standard for Liang Cha in 2013, and worked with SGS, a leading inspection and verification company headquartered in Switzerland, World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS) as well as TCM enterprises and experts from more than 10 countries.

Based on related standards for food safety around the world and the unique characteristics of TCM, the proposal eventually gained support from over one hundred members of WFCMS and has become the first technical standard in the world for such a beverage.

Zheng Rongbo, Dean of Wanglaoji Research Institute, said the release of the standard has profound benefit for Chinese herbal tea entering into the international market and will push forward the development of the world’s herbal beverage industry.

Dr. Yang Lufang from SGS

Yang Lufang from SGS said the standard adopts various technical indicators such as additives and physicochemical properties. It also considers the application of raw ingredients, manufacturing technology and TCM regulation of different countries. Thus, the standard is able to effectively guarantee the quality and standardize the production of herbal beverages.
