“I think that the Canton Fair is an ambassador for China,” said Mr. Giovanni B. Ferrare F., General Manager of Panama’s Colon Free Trade Zone, during his time at the Canton Fair on October 31st, the first day of the fair’s third phase.

Mr. Ferrare is currently on a tour of south China. He was deeply impressed by the Canton Fair after just a half day tour in the complex. He said he had not imagined the fair to be so large and well organized with such high attendance.

He voiced his opinion that the Canton Fair shows the modernization of Chinese industries, “To not be here is very risky, because you might be left behind. I will encourage my people to come as buyers, tourists and traders”.

This was Mr. Ferrare’s second time visiting China and the first time visiting the fair, and remarked how much more modern and advanced China has become relative to other countries since his first visit 38 years ago.

“There is a Chinese trend. It’s very elaborate and something different from what you would see in the west. I think it’s a tribute to Chinese craftsmanship and taste,” said Mr. Giovanni Ferrare while appreciating the silk garments at the fair.

Colon Free Trade Zone, one of the largest free trade areas in the world, is “a gateway for 400 million consumers” on the American continent. Mr. Ferrare explained that the biggest advantage of the Colon Free Trade Zone is its connectivity with other Latin American countries. Now 35% of the goods in the free trade zone come from China, with garments forming the bulk of these goods.

At present, both Guangdong and the Colon Free Trade Zone are seeking opportunities to further cooperation. Mr. Ferrare said, “Chinese companies will be able to discover the convenience of going to Panama and establishing connection with Latin American buyers at the Canton Fair.”
