From July 1st, people living in Shanghai are required to sort their waste into four categories. Individuals, including visitors, can be fined up to 200 yuan for sorting their rubbish improperly, while companies and institutions can be fined up to 50,000 yuan.

In order to ready themselves for the new classification system, Shanghai people have been busying themselves at learning and adapting the new regulation.

So, when will Guangzhou and Shenzhen implement the same regulation?

According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, a total of 46 cities will implement the regulation of garbage classification by the end of 2020, including Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

Are you worrying about the upcoming regulation being tricky or inconvenient?

Don’t worry, here are the guidelines for waste classification:

A slightly weird “piggy song” has emerged on the net to make it 'easier', here is a rough English translation:

The brown bin has what piggy wants; (Household food waste)

The black bin is what piggy dislikes; (Residual waste)

The blue bin things piggy trades for goods; (Recyclable waste)

Things in the red bin, kill piggy dead. (Hazardous waste)

Not bad right? Now here’s the real garbage sorting guide:

1.Recyclable waste: trash that can be recycled ( Blue bin)

1) Paper: books, envelopes, paper bags, cardboard boxes

2) Plastics: plastic toys, plastic bottles, foam plastics

3) Glass: glass bottles, window glass

5) Textiles: bags, clothing, bedding, plush toys

6) Others: circuit boards, wire, butcher’s blocks

2.Hazardous waste: waste posing threats to public health or the environment ( Red bin)

1) Batteries: storage battery, lead-acid battery, button cell

5) Paint: paint cans, nail polish, hair dye

6) Film: x-ray film, photo film

7) Poison: disinfectant, pesticide, rodenticide

[Handle carefully with a package; empty contents of pressurized containers]

3.Household food waste: perishable domestic waste ( Brown bin)

1) Scraps: grain, meat, vegetables, sauces, spices

2) Leftover: hot pot seasoning, fish bones, coffee residue, residue of TCM herbs

3) Expired food: cakes, candy, pet food

4) Fruit: rind, seed, pulp

5) Flower & plant: leaf, branch, petals

4.Residual waste: other waste not recyclable, hazardous or household food waste ( Black bin)

Remember to make sure your waste is disposed of in the right bin.
