An international research base for tumor stem cell vaccines was inaugurated at the Shenzhen University’s Health Science Center on Saturday.

The research base, led by Distinguished Professor Dennis Carson of the United States, is expected to become an influential research institute in Shenzhen, promoting the development of medical research in the city.

The Health Science Center was established in 2008 and celebrated its 10th anniversary over the weekend. Shenzhen Vice Mayor Wu Yihuan attended the inauguration and anniversary ceremony Saturday.

During the anniversary ceremony, Li Qingquan, president of Shenzhen University, addressed the center’s ambition to become one of the top 20 medical schools in China in five to 10 years’ time.

With the support of the center, the Shenzhen University General Hospital started operation this year.

According to Li, the center had already built up an initial system for scientific and medical development in its first 10 years and will further develop in the following years. Li also pledged that the university will further support the center with talents, funds and other research resources.

It is estimated that the center will have more than 5,000 students for undergraduate, graduate and Ph. D. studies in the next five to 10 years.

Currently, the center has 1,302 bachelor’s students and 526 graduate students with over 400 teaching staffers.
