Since May 2016, three young employees of GPHL have been living and working in three villages in Meizhou to help the local people solve their difficulties, fulfilling GPHL’s mission of targeted poverty alleviation and carrying forward the corporate spirit of “Love for the World”.
Wang Ka (L), Wu Xiaojin (M) and Luo Ruliang (R)
The three villages, Wanxi Village, Yuanling Village and Jingkou Village in Songyuan Town, Meizhou, were underdeveloped due to their remote location and inconvenient transportation.
It has been two years now. How are the three young men doing in the villages? How have the villages changed?
There are 145 low income families in the three villages, 117 of which have gotten out of poverty since 2016. All are very likely to overcome poverty by the end of 2018, which is ahead of the anti-poverty schedule.
Jingkou Village
The collective income of each village was originally less than 10,000 RMB, but it has now increased to 50,000 RMB.
The villages have been changed greatly, with new waterways for field irrigation and street lamps on most of the main roads.
Wang Ka, GPHL’s staff member for poverty alleviation in Jingkou Village
Wang Ka is from Hubei Province.
Wang told us that he is also from a rural village and feels obligated to give back to society, and that’s why he signed up for the anti-poverty project in Meizhou. His decision was strongly supported by his father as well. “Taking part in the anti-poverty project is the best decision of my life,” said Wang.
Luo Ruliang, GPHL’s staff member for poverty alleviation in Yuanling Village
During his stay in the village, Luo injured his right knee and was once unable to walk. Only a few weeks after his surgery, he went back to the village for work. The villagers tried to persuade him to rest for a few more days, but Luo said since he had decided to do this, he didn’t want to delay the work because of a minor injury.
Wu Xiaojin, GPHL’s staff member for poverty alleviation in Wanxi Village
Working in Wanxi Village separated Wu from his girlfriend, and sometimes they couldn’t meet eachother for more than month. In 2018, they got married, and Wu decided to carry on his poverty-relief work in the village, while his wife supports him as always. Wu said, “The two-years of anti-poverty work in Wanxi Village is one of the most unforgettable and spiritually nourishing experiences of my life.”
