Located in the south of the Pearl River Delta, the city of Heshan is the birthplace of the founder of Wanglaoji herbal tea, Wang Zebang, and where he started his business. To raise cultural awareness, staff of GPHL and its subsidiaries Wanglaoji Health and Wanglaoji Pharmaceutical went on a trip to Heshan from April 1 to 2.

During the two-day trip, the GPHL team not only visited Wang Zebang’s ancestral temple and the house where he used to live, but also a renowned local enterprise, Astros Printing, and discussed the company’s cultural development with its executives.

Furthermore, they organized a seminar with local government officials, where the two parties  discussed possible modes for development of the long-lasting cooperation between GPHL and Heshan.

Qiu Jianhua, Director of Cooperation Culture and Deputy Director of the General Office of GPHL, said the enterprise signed a cooperative agreement with Heshan municipal government in 2013, since when they have been jointly developing and promoting Wanglaoji’s brand culture.

Over the past five years, GPHL and Heshan have had a number of official titles successfully approved such as: “the origin of Chinese herbal tea”, “the hometown of Wanglaoji” and “Guangdong’s ancient village”, which have both improved Heshan’s cultural image and deepened people’s understanding of the 190-year-history of Wanglaoji.

“The cooperation with Heshan helps us to integrate cultural resources, which is proven to benefit GPHL’s cultural value. And visiting Heshan and Gulao is a great chance for our staff to learn about Wanglaoji’s history and absorb the experience of brand building,” said Qiu Jianhua.

During the seminar, Wanglaoji Pharmaceutical also donated 20 computers to Shangsheng in Gulao township, to support the village’s development. Meanwhile, local government officials expressed willingness to strengthen cooperation with GPHL, and eventually to boost the cultural output as well as the village’s development.

With a history of over 600 years, Gulao has a comprehensive network of waterways and is comprised of numerous agricultural farmlands and fish ponds along the Xijiang River.

The town is also famous for its lion dance performances and Liang Zan Wing Chun  (a traditional Southern Chinese martial art recognised in 2008 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Guangdong Province).
