Being at the forefront of philanthropy and setting examples for others is the legacy of GPHL. In the history of GPHL, many employees have flung themselves into this just cause.

On the evening of December 13th, 1958, when some employees, including Xiang Xiuli and Luo Xiuming, were working at Baiyunshan He Ji Gong Pharmaceutical Factory (He Ji Gong), a big jar was suddenly broken and the ethyl alcohol inside caught fire, reaching highly reactive explosive chemical, sodium nearby. In such a critical moment, Xiang Xiuli did not run away. She stopped the fire from spreading by lying on the floor. She prevented an explosion accident, but she was badly burned. After being in a coma for three days, she finally woke up. As soon as she opened her eyes, she asked, “Did sodium explode? Did the factory suffer losses? Did Luo Xiuming get hurt?” Unfortunately, she was too badly hurt to be saved. Xiang Xiuli passed away on January 15th, 1959.

In order to commemorate her spirit as an invaluable legacy for future generations, Guangzhou government renamed the He Ji Gong Factory building as the Xiuli Building, and the location of this factory as Xiuli Street.
