Recently, Nature Magazine, the world's leading multidisciplinary science journal, published an article on its website titled "Making it in the megacity," highlighting China's Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area's success in becoming a new leading scientific and innovative center globally. Many young, ambitious researchers have chosen to relocate to the region and started their scientific research career.

With enormous economic and financial clout, the Greater Bay Area (GBA) has attracted an increasing number of ambitious young researchers to start their career there, such as the roboticist Yun Yee Leung, the disease detective Nan Zong, the beauty biologist Jili Yang, and the engineer Tao Yang, etc. With all kinds of start-up initiatives, funding schemes, many entrepreneurial opportunities for young scientists, and the lightning-fast take-up of new technologies, the GBA has become the top career destination for them.

"For early-career scientists like me, this feels like a huge opportunity to realize creative ideas and work at the cutting-edge of technology. Cities such as Shenzhen and Dongguan in the GBA have become international hubs of advanced manufacturing where graduates in my field can find good jobs to start their careers." said engineer Tao Yang.

The GBA consists of the Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, and nine cities in Guangdong (namely Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, and Zhaoqing) with a total area of 56,000 square kilometers. It is a region with high openness, a strong economy, and strategic importance in China.

GBA is home to some of the world's most innovative and influential technology companies, for instance, big-data and technology firm Tencent, world-leading drone manufacturer DJI and telecommunications firm Huawei, etc.

A few weeks ago, China revealed CPC's proposals for the 14th Five-year Plan. According to the Plan, to intensify the national strategic strength in science and technology, focus on core technologies, and improve the innovation chain's overall efficiency, China will support the formation of international science and technology innovation centers in the Greater Bay Area as well as Beijing and Shanghai. With so many inspiring policies, more young, energetic researchers will choose to relocate to GBA and grow up with the region.
