Jingxiutang launches mascot design competition for four Palace Museum collections

When researchers reviewed imperial medical records in July 2017, four collections of the Palace Museum in relation to GPHL’s subsidiary Guangzhou Baiyunshan Jingxiutang Pharmaceutical Company Limited (‘Jingxiutang’) were discovered. These collections with a history of more than 200 years include Jingxiutang Gynaecological Baifeng Wan and its instructions, the Introduction to Jingxiutang Medical Products and a Jingxiutang Zijinding Pendant Inlaid with Mother-of-Pearl.

This year Jingxiutang celebrates the 230th anniversary of its establishment. In order to increase brand awareness, Jingxiutang is launching this mascot design competition and offers a total prize money of more than 10,000 RMB to the winners.

Details of the collections and the requirements for competition participants are set out as follows:

Jingxiutang Gynaecological Baifeng Wan (敬修堂妇科白凤丸)

Enclosed within a wax-sealed container, the pill was made according to exclusive prescription and used in a special way. Its major ingredient is black bone chicken. This herbal medicine has been traditionally used in relieving symptoms caused by deficiency in both inner energy and blood, irregular and otherwise. It is now housed at the Palace Museum.

Instructions for Jingxiutang Gynaecological Baifeng Wan (敬修堂妇科白凤丸仿单)

The drug instructions for Jingxiutang Gynaecological Baifeng Wan relate to the pill’s prescription and indications in detail and is now housed at the Palace Museum.

Jingxiutang Zijinding Pendant Inlaid with Mother-of-Pearl (敬修堂`螺钿紫金锭佩)

Zijinding, a traditional Chinese medicine preparation, has detoxification and anti-inflammatory effects. It can be used to treat carbuncles, sores, insect bites, injuries and damage as well as swelling with unknown causes. It also diffuses the scent of clove which can be used to repel mosquitoes and insects. In ancient times, people often wore Zijinding-made accessories. The pendant is now housed at the Palace Museum. The topical Zijinding is one of Jingxiutang’s exclusive products.

Introduction to Jingxiutang Medical Products 《敬修堂十种药说》

This was written by Qian Shutian, founder of Jingxiutang in the ninth year of Emperor Jiaqing’s reign and contains the records of 16 original medicines produced by Jingxiutang, such as ointments, pellets, pills and powderas well as 67 traditional medicines. The book is a document for the intangible culture of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) created by Jingxiutang, an integral part of Lingnan TCM culture. It is now housed at the Palace Museum.

Requirements

1. To design based on these four Palace Museum collections. You can choose either one collection or several ones to focus on.

2. The mascot shall be easy to remember and publicize, and be apppropriate for print media, digital media and recreation.

3. You are required to submit the graphic design of the mascot along with descriptions, including basic information of the mascot, such as its name and sex, design concept and explanation.

Vote for the Most Popular Design: October 9th-October 13th, 12:00 noon

Panel selection: October 9th-October 13th

Public announcement: October 17th
